Dark Mode Off / On

At 43, I remember once wondering what it would feel like to turn 40 and now here I am at 43.

This birthday feels completely different. I am recovering from an illness, and there was a moment I truly feared I would be spending my 43rd birthday in a hospital. Thankfully, I am home, surrounded by my family.

Even if I can’t celebrate the way I normally would, I am deeply grateful to be alive and to share this moment with the people I love.

Things I Know at 43

I have learned so much during the years. These past few years have been eye-opening; professionally, physically, and mentally.

Family will always come first. A job is never guaranteed, and the reality is that you can be replaced at any time.

Taking care of your physical and mental health is non-negotiable. Too often, we put ourselves last because we’re “too busy,” until it catches up with us.

At 43, it feels pointless to constantly worry about what others think. This is my life, and I choose to live it in a way that brings me peace and happiness.

What I’ve Let Go Of

Over time, I’ve released the things that no longer serve me:

  • People-pleasing
  • Toxic relationships
  • Unrealistic timelines (career, love, success)
  • The need to have everything figured out

And yes, at 43, I am still figuring things out and that’s okay. Life doesn’t have to follow society’s expectations to be meaningful.

What I’m Just Getting Started On

I changed careers in my late 30’s, started a blog, began a new job in my 40s, and recently made the decision to to take a break from work to focus on my health and wellbeing.

What comes next? Honestly, I don’t fully know.

What I do know is this: I am driven, and when I set my mind to something, I follow through. At the same time, these past few months have taught me to slow down and take life one day at a time.

When the time is right, I will continue:

  • Pursuing new goals, risks, and dreams
  • Reinventing parts of myself
  • Strengthening my faith

At 23 vs. 33 vs. 43

A positive quote on a white clock

In my 20s, I was exploring life, having fun, and discovering new experiences.

In my 30s, I began rediscovering myself and seeing new possibilities.

Now, in my 40s, I am learning to slow down while continuing to grow and transform.

My perspective on relationships, career, and life has shifted in ways I never imagined, but that’s part of growth. Change brings growth.

My Mindset Shift

At 43, I’m choosing to focus on my mental health and build a more positive, resilient mindset. I am also:

  • Letting go of comparisons and embracing who I truly am
  • Worrying less about the small things and focusing more on what truly matters
  • Slowing down enough to enjoy the little moments and appreciate the life and blessings I have

Rules I Live By Now

Protecting my inner peace is a priority.

Negative comments and disrespectful people no longer get to control my mood or my energy. My peace means too much to me.

Advice to My Younger Self

You have so much to offer. Go after what you love and build a life filled with purpose.

You will meet both kind and difficult people, each will teach you something valuable. Embrace every challenge as part of your growth.

And most importantly, I am proud of who you’ve become and everything you will accomplish.

Final Thoughts

At 43, life isn’t perfect, but it’s real, meaningful, and mine and for that, I am grateful.

I will keep learning and keep growing every day.

Embrace your 40’s, there here for a reason.

Best wishes,

Mel
