You’re ready for your well-deserved family vacation and excited to start packing. But if you’re anything like me, with your head all over the place, it’s easy to forget a few essentials, and only realize it when you actually need them. Trust me, that’s not a fun moment… especially when it happens on a New Year’s Eve cruise. To help you avoid the same packing mistakes, I’ve put together this family vacation packing list so you can feel organized and ready for your next family adventure.
1. Absolute Essentials

Whether you’re an experienced traveler or taking your first cruise or trip, make sure these items are packed. They’re essentials you simply can’t travel without and would be the hardest and most stressful to replace once you’re already on vacation.
- Travel documents (IDs, passports, tickets)
- Wallet, cash, credit cards
- Phone + chargers + power bank
- House/car keys
- Prescription medications
- Eyeglasses
- Health insurance cards
- Emergency contact list
Remember to check if your IDs and passports are valid. If you are traveling on an open-loop cruise, which are cruises that start and end in different ports, your passport must be valid for at least six months after your cruise ends.
2. Kids’ Essentials
When traveling as a family, kids’ needs come first. Having their essentials packed and easily accessible can make the difference between a smooth trip and a very long, exhausting one. If you’re traveling with babies, this becomes even more important.
Babies & Toddlers
- Diapers, wipes, pull-ups
- Rash cream
- Extra clothes (more than you think)
- Bibs and burp cloths
- Baby carrier or stroller
- Nighttime sleep items (sound machine, sleep sack)
School-Aged Kids
- Comfortable everyday outfits
- Pajamas and underwear
- Favorite comfort item (stuffed animal or blanket)
- Reusable water bottle
- Basic toiletries (toothbrush, hairbrush)
All Kids
- Snacks and spill-proof cups
- Small backpack for outings
3. Clothing, Shoes and Accessories

Packing clothes for the whole family can feel overwhelming, but focusing on versatile pieces and essentials makes it much easier. Here’s a simple guide to cover what everyone will need:
Clothing:
- Everyday outfits (shirts, pants, skirts)
- Pajamas
- Underwear and socks
- Weather-specific items (jackets, swimwear, scarfs, gloves)
- Workout clothes
Shoes:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Dressy outfit shoes (if needed)
- Weather-specific shoes (sandals, boots, tennis shoes)
Accessories:
- Hats or caps
- Jewelry (earrings, necklace, bracelets)
4. Toiletries and Personal Care

These everyday items are easy to overlook but incredibly annoying to forget. Packing the right toiletries ensures everyone stays comfortable and feeling their best during the trip.
- Travel-size soap and shampoo
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
- Hairbrush and hair ties
- Skincare and makeup (keep it minimal!)
- Deodorant
- Body lotion
- Feminine hygiene products
- Sunscreen and lip balm
If you like styling your hair, don’t forget your hair iron and hairspray. I accidentally left mine packed with my makeup and only realized it once I was already on the cruise, not the best moment, especially on a New Year’s Eve trip.
That said, I tried to see the positive side. It was surprisingly liberating not having to style my hair or wear makeup every night. While it wasn’t ideal for a New Year’s cruise, I made it work. Cruises do have spas where you can get your hair done, but I usually skip that to save money.
5. Health and Safety

No one wants to think about getting sick on vacation, but being prepared brings peace of mind.
- First aid kit
- Thermometer
- Pain/fever medication for kids
- Allergy medicine
- Band-aids
- Hand sanitizer
- Bug spray
Imagine getting sick on a cruise or while traveling internationally, it happens more often than we think. On our New Year’s Eve cruise in 2025, my daughter got sick, and the same thing happened years ago during our trip to Jordan.
Having the essentials with us meant I could check her temperature and give her medication to reduce fever and cough symptoms. However, in both cases, I still had to take her to a doctor, and being prepared helped us manage the situation until we could get proper medical care.
6. Entertainment and Sanity Savers

Long travel days and downtime are much easier with a few well-chosen activities. These items help keep kids entertained and parents sane.
- Tablets/headphones
- Coloring books & crayons
- Small toys or surprise activities
- Books
- Travel games
- Downloaded movies/shows
7. Destination-Specific Items

Every vacation is different. This category covers items you’ll only need based on where you’re going and what activities you have planned.
- Backpack or tote
- Swim
- Sunglasses
- Goggles
- Beach toys
- Binoculars
- Reusable water bottles
Even though many people no longer carry standalone cameras and instead use the built-in cameras on their smartphones, some travelers still prefer bringing a camera, especially for scenic trips. If you plan to use your smartphone for photos, I highly recommend packing a tripod.
When we traveled through Spain, France, and England with a group of 12 people, we often took turns taking photos. However, getting pictures with everyone in them was a challenge. Having a tripod saved the day and made group photos easy.
Final Thoughts
Traveling with kids can be challenging, but a little preparation goes a long way. Using this family vacation packing list helps you stay organized, remember the essentials, and feel more confident while on the go.
Best wishes,
Mel
