Family memories don’t have to live only on your phone. We take thousands of photos, and saving them to Google Photos or Google Drive is convenient, but how often do we actually look at those photos together as a family? A physical memory book gives you something you can look through and enjoy together for years to come.
I’ve always loved having something physical that reminds us of the places we’ve been, the things we’ve done, and the little moments that might otherwise be forgotten. When my husband and I got married, we created a photo album for the trips we took together. We loved looking back at those memories, and honestly, it often made us want to start planning our next adventure!
But over the years, we ended up with so many photo albums that our apartment started to feel a little chaotic. Eventually, we began relying more on Google Drive and digital photos to store our memories. Now that we have our daughter, we want to create a family memory book with her, too, so we can enjoy our favorite memories together.
Since we love traveling and having new experiences as a family, we don’t create a separate book for every adventure. Instead, we usually choose one to three favorite photos from each place we visit and add them to the family memory books we keep in our office/multipurpose room.
It’s a simple way to keep our favorite memories close without filling our home with dozens of photo albums.

A Note About Our Photos: All of the photos in this post are from our family’s trips. These are our personal photographs and are not stock images. Please do not copy, reproduce, or use them without permission. We hope you enjoy seeing a little piece of our journey!
Why Create a Family Memory Book?
A family memory book doesn’t have to focus only on big trips that involve getting on a plane or cruise ship. Any family experience can be worth remembering and sharing. It could be a visit to the zoo, a trip to the park, a movie at the theater, a visit to the library, or simply a place where your family had a great time.
Here are some of the many reasons to create a family memory book:
- Give your children something physical to look back on
- Capture the little details you might otherwise forget
- Make time to sit together and relive your favorite family moments
- Document your family’s traditions and adventures
- Create something that becomes more valuable with time
- Tell your family’s story in your own way
You don’t have to be crafty or create a scrapbook that looks perfect. The goal isn’t to make something worthy of Pinterest. It’s to create something that feels like your family.
Choose the Type of Memory Book
Photo Album

We purchased a photo album on our Explorer of the Seas cruise. It came with a journaling kit, and as a former teacher, I love anything that involves stickers, positive messages, cutting, pasting, and organizing. So, of course, I had fun putting it together!
If you’re going on a cruise, check the photo shop the day before you arrive home. They often have discounts on photo-related items, which can be a great opportunity to pick up an album or other supplies for your vacation memories.

This photo book is specifically for our trips to the Caribbean, but you can use any type of photo album to document different trips, adventures, or special occasions with your family.
Here are some ideas you can include in your album:
- Favorite vacation photos
- Family pictures
- Photos of places you visited
- Tickets or other small paper keepsakes
- Little notes about what you did
- Favorite moments from the trip

We created this album after our New Year’s cruise, and we were so excited to choose the photos, quotes, and decorative elements we wanted to include. We had so much fun putting everything together in a way that felt special and uniquely ours.
Scrapbook

I love scrapbooks because they give you more freedom to get creative. You can use:
- Decorative paper
- Stickers
- Drawings
- Handwritten notes
- Quotes
- Ticket stubs
- Maps
- Receipts
- Little souvenirs
- Your child’s artwork
Scrapbooking is also a great way to involve your children in creating your family memories while spending quality time together. Make it pretty, make it fun, and make it unique to your family.
I also love using decorative craft scissors that create different edges. They’re such a simple way to add a fun touch to your pages.

Make Your Memory Book Personal
Instead of simply putting pictures on pages, ask:
What makes this memory uniquely ours?
💕 Funny family quotes
Write down something your child said that made everyone laugh.
🎨 Drawings
Let your child draw something from the experience.
🎟️ Tickets and paper keepsakes
Add cruise tickets, museum tickets, attraction tickets or boarding passes to the memory book.
📍 Maps
Add a small map showing where you went.
🍴 Favorite foods
Write down the restaurant or meal everyone loved.
😂 Funny moments
The things that didn’t go according to plan can become some of your favorite stories.
❤️ Favorite memory
Have each family member choose their favorite moment.
Let Your Kids Help Create It
This is another great way to turn the project itself into family time. Your children can:
- Choose their favorite photos
- Write captions
- Draw pictures
- Pick stickers
- Write down favorite memories
- Decorate pages
You could even have a yearly tradition where everyone sits down together and creates that year’s pages.
Now the memory book itself becomes a family memory.
Create a Family Photo Collage
A family memory doesn’t always have to be kept in an album or scrapbook. One of my favorite ways to display our memories is with a large photo collage frame. I created one using photos from several of our family trips.

I love that we can enjoy the memories every day instead of keeping them tucked away in an album. Every time I look at it, I’m reminded of the places we’ve been, the experiences we’ve shared, and all the memories we’ve made together.
We’ve created so many of these memories through family travel. Our family travels have given us so many meaningful experiences, and I’ve shared more about the benefits of family travel and ways to prepare your kids in another post.
A photo collage is also a great option if you want something meaningful but don’t consider yourself a creative person. Choose your favorite photos, arrange them in a frame, and create a piece that your family loves.
Final Thoughts
Start with one memory.
You don’t need to document your family’s entire life. Pick one vacation, birthday, school year, or special season and start there.
Because one day, that little book you’re making on the living room floor may become something your child treasures far more than you realize today.
Best wishes,
Meli
