Why do we always feel guilty when it comes to our own needs? As mothers, we feel constant pressure to always be doing something and doing it perfectly.

As I write this, I think about watching Bad Moms. I imagine many moms can relate to feeling tired of doing everything for everyone, while also feeling like you’re failing in every area of your life.

We feel the need to keep taking on responsibilities even when our cup is full because we don’t know how to set boundaries and say NO.

Listen to me. You have the right to be tired. You have the right to rest and that does not make you lazy.

Rest means slowing down, doing what you can, and giving yourself time. It can actually boost your productivity.

  • Small tasks feel overwhelming
  • You are easily irritated
  • You feel emotionally drained
  • You have no time or energy for yourself
  • You’re doing everything you’re supposed to do, but without joy
  • You forget things, lose track of tasks, or can’t concentrate like you used to
  • You give so much, but feel like no one notices
  • You feel guilty when you rest and guilty when you don’t do enough
  • You’ve lost motivation for hobbies, goals, and passions

There are different types of rest that can help you:

  • Physical rest (sleep, naps)
  • Mental rest (quiet time, less decision-making)
  • Emotional rest (talking, journaling)
  • Social rest (taking space from people)
  • Sensory rest (less noise, screen-free activities)

Be mindful of how you spend your quiet time. If you use it scrolling on your phone, comparing yourself to “perfect” moms on Instagram and it leaves you feeling stressed or guilty, you’ve defeated the purpose of rest.

Instead, try reading, writing, or simply doing nothing. Mental rest means stepping away from what overwhelms you.

How Rest Makes You More Productive

You might wonder how rest helps when it takes time away from your tasks. But everything feels harder when you’re exhausted.

When you rest, you may notice:

  • Better focus

  • A greater sense of calm
